When I was young I learned this lesson from my dad,
If my brothers and I would have to wait
We didn't like how long it took to get what made us glad
But he hoped we'd acquire this great trait

Patience is a virtue, he'd say with a smile
whenever we would wine or pout or cry.
what you'd like to get you might get after a while
as long as you wait and work and try.

It's hard to be patient when you're the youngest one
and you can't do what older kids do
I'd see all they had and longed to join in their fun
Ignoring fun I could be having too.

When they were in high school I wished I could be there,
when they left for college I longed to go.
if only I had listened to those words with more care,
and learned this lesson he hoped I would know

What you'd like to get you might get after a while
as long as you wait and work and try

when I longing for a place I'd like to go,
I stop and look at where I am.
I try to take my time, because I never know
If I'll get to enjoy this "now" again.

When I have kids this lesson I will tell
If ever they want time to move fast
I hope they will listen, and that I'll teach it well
Because I want that precious time to last
