Carley Baer who arranged the club in 2023, wrote on 1/01/2024 about her thoughts regarding the club:
"Bad Song Club is not an expectation or a commitment to be bad… it's simply permission to not have to be good. It's the way we songwriters tend to hang our feelings of self-worth on how brilliant we think our most recent creation is, and how we chase the fickle spirit of inspiration in an effort to achieve some elusive marker of quality, that necessitates the exercise of fighting against it.
Bad Song Club is exercise. It's the songwriting equivalent of circuit training at the gym (how's that for a timely metaphor). It's the workout that keeps you in fightin' shape so that when you want to sit down and write something meaningful, you don't have to waste valuable time getting back into the zone, because you live here now. You live in the zone.
Set a 30-minute timer
Write whatever comes out, even if you don't like it
Finish what you start (this is the only rule)
Have fun!"
I like the idea of having a specific target and not worrying about the perfect result. The prompts are often very inspiring and there is no rule of not being able to revisit the music later and make it better or re-record, I know that many of the prompts inspired me to create pieces to the titles I personally wouldn't think about. I hope you enjoy your listening. Thank you for tuning in.
